The Oak Mountain High School Eagles (16-7-1, 5-1) concluded their regular season with a convincing 6-1 win on Senior Night over the Springville High School Tigers (16-6).
Patrick Guffey began the scoring for Oak Mountain in the 3rd minute of play, as he launched a 25-yard shot cleanly into the net for a lead the Eagles would never relinquish. It didn’t take long for the Eagles to strike again, as Senior Cody Wells struck a shot under the keeper in the 8th minute for a 2-0 lead.
After a Springville goal, Oak Mountain was fouled 20 yards out and capitalized on the free kick. Guffey tapped the free kick to Wells, and the senior again delivered just outside the box with a bullet to the corner and a 3-1 lead.
Oak Mountain carried the 3-1 lead into halftime and began the 2nd half with more of the same. Jorge Resto-Meaux dribbled and got clear for a shot that found the back of the net with 20 minutes to play, and a 4-1 Eagle lead.
Senior Jose Nunez was involved in the next Oak Mountain scoring opportunity, as he flicked the ball to Logan Dunnaway, who volleyed in Oak Mountain’s 5th goal just five minutes later.
Resto-Meaux wasn’t finished, as just moments later, he curved a shot to the back post that the Springville keeper couldn’t reach, and Oak Mountain held a commanding 6-1 lead with 14 minutes to play. Senior Sullivan Ortega kept Springville at bay with some excellent saves and goalkeeping, and Oak Mountain cruised to the 6-1 final.
The regular season concluded with this game, but the # 2 ranked Oak Mountain boys and all of their Seniors haven’t finished play. Oak Mountain will travel to Vestavia High School Monday night at 7 p.m. in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs, hoping to capitalize on the senior leadership provided by the outstanding young men of Oak Mountain High School:
Senior Sullivan Ortega
Senior Zay Brown
Senior John Long
Senior Collin Cartwright
Senior Cody Wells
Senior Jose Nunez
Senior Ben O’Neil
Thank you, Seniors. Good luck in the playoffs.
