Oak Mountain (13-5, 4-1) collected their 11th shutout of the season with an important 6-0 Area 5 win over Tuscaloosa County (11-6-1) Thursday night at Oak Mountain. The win was Oak Mountain’s second shutout of the week after posting a 2-nil victory Tuesday night at Westminster.
Oak Mountain pounced on Tuscaloosa County early, as Perry Brake fed Patrick Guffey, who beat Wildcat defenders and placed an expert shot to put Oak Mountain ahead, 1-0. Shortly afterward, Cody Wells headed the ball back post to Corbitt Grundhoeffer who headed the shot into the net for a 2-0 Eagle lead.
Just after the midway point of the first half, Guffey again saw an opening, beating defenders, and was fouled on his way to the goal. He buried the ensuing penalty kick for a 3-0 Eagle advantage they carried into halftime.
Oak Mountain opened play on the near side of the field in the second half, but saw more of the same. Seth Acton played a ball into the box that Cody Wells headed down and toward the keeper, who deflected it and Guffey was there to clean it up with a flick into the net and a 4-0 lead.
The Wells-Guffey duo struck again with Wells sending a ball to Guffey, who earned a hat trick, putting Oak Mountain up, 5-0. Haruki Hoshino finished the scoring with nifty footwork at the top of the box before lacing a shot past the keeper for the final 6-0 Oak Mountain victory.
The # 2 ranked Eagles of Oak Mountain will hit the road tomorrow to travel out of state to face Georgia AAAAA powerhouse McIntosh High School. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. CT).
