The # 2 7A Oak Mountain Eagles posted a 2-nil victory over the defending 1A-3A state champion Westminster Knights. The game was moved to Westminster after thunderstorms visited Oak Mountain’s fields earlier in the day, making the field too wet to play.
Oak Mountain controlled possession from opening kickoff, displaying a passing game using everyone on the field. Patrick Guffey fired a free kick into the box, and when Westminster cleared it out, Ryan Webb volleyed the bouncing ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 Oak Mountain lead with 13:37 to play in the half.
The goal sparked the Eagles, who continued to look for more. Cody Wells laced a shot just over the crossbar shortly thereafter. Although that shot didn’t land, Wells found another opportunity with the clock ticking toward halftime, racing down the left side of the field, and serving a cross in that Daniel Barrington finished with only 13 ticks remaining til halftime.
Oak Mountain took the 2-0 lead into halftime, and as the rain fell in the second half, the Eagle defense stayed resolute in seeking the shutout. Keepers Zay Brown and Sullivan Ortega earned the clean sheet for the 10th time this season.
Oak Mountain (12-5, 3-1) will return to action in 5A play Thursday night against Tuscaloosa County (7-5-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Oak Mountain.
