Four Senior Oak Mountain pitchers combined to shutout the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats 5-0 Thursday night at Oak Mountain High School to close out the 2021 season and the high school careers for 12 Eagles Seniors. The Eagles finished the season with 21 wins and 15 losses.
It was a pitcher’s battle as the game was scoreless until the bottom half of the 5th inning when Oak Mountain broke through with 4 runs to take the lead. Mitchell Pierce got things going with a lead-off single. With 2 outs, Davis Gillespie doubled home Pierce for the only run the Eagles would need. Andrew Hunt followed with a walk, and when Drew Rowland reached on a Wildcat error, Gillespie scored to make the score 2-0. Kyle Smith singled in Hunt & Rowland for the 4-0 Oak Mountain lead.
The Eagles added one more run in the 6th. With one out, Pierce doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundball by Stephen Moraski.
Mitchell Pierce led the Eagles offense going 3 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored. Davis Gillespie had 2 doubles, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored for Oak Mountain. Kyle Smith also had a single and 2 RBI, while Stephen Moraski added 1 RBI, and Andrew Hunt & Drew Rowland scored 1 run each for the Eagles.
The pitching was dominant for Oak Mountain, only allowing 2 hits while striking out 14 Wildcat batters. Stone Evers was the starter on the hill for the Eagles, going 2 innings, allowing 0 hits and 1 walk, with 3 strikeouts. Cooper Ortega threw the next 2 innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 6. Jackson Swarts also pitched 2 innings, also surrendering only 1 hit, with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. Luke Smith came on to pitch the final inning, striking out the side in order to close out the game and the season.
