The Oak Mountain Eagles lost their first game of the year to 6A Chelsea HS Hornets 13-4 as their pitching and defense faltered. The Eagles surrendered 9 walks, 2 players hit-by-pitch (HBP), and committed 5 errors on the day, leading to 7 unearned runs.
In the top of the first inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with 2 outs but were unable to push a run across. The Chelsea Hornets jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the inning against starter Davis Gillespie. With 2 outs, Chelsea strung together 3 singles and a walk to get on the scoreboard first.
The Eagles came back to score 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning to take the lead. Mitchell Pierce and Gillespie started the inning with a single & a double respectively. Andrew Hunt then reached on an error driving in Pierce. Stephen Moraski closed the gap to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly scoring Gillespie. Maddox Macrory singled to plate Hunt tying the score at 3. Oak Mountain then scored their final run of the day when Jake Derecki singled to bring in Macrory.
The Hornets reclaimed the lead in the 5th scoring 6 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 2 errors by the Eagles. Chelsea then put the game away in the 6th by adding 4 more runs on a leadoff infield single, followed by 3 walks, 1 HBP, and 2 errors by the Eagles.
Pierce & Gillespie both went 2 for 4 for Oak Mountain, while Stone Evers, Taylor Bush, Macrory, & Derecki added one hit each. Hunt, Moraski, Macrory, and Derecki each had 1 RBI, and Pierce, GIllespie, Hunt & Macrory all scored 1 run apiece for the Eagles.
Gillespie pitched 4 innings, giving up 3 hits, 5 walks, and striking out 4. Luke Smith & Jack Adamson pitched 1 inning each with 1 strikeout each. Cooper Ortega also pitched for the Eagles.
