Playing at Chelsea High School, Oak Mountain Eagles Varsity Baseball beat 6A Oxford Yellow Jackets 8-3 Saturday afternoon in the first of two games. The Eagles pounded out 12 hits and played great defense with no errors in the win.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first without getting a hit. Oak Mountain loaded the bases on walks by Mitchell Pierce, Davis Gillespie, and Andrew Hunt. Then on consecutive pitches, Pierce scored on a passed ball & Gillespie on a wild pitch.

Oxford tied the game 2-2 in the top of the 4th inning. With 2 outs, a batter reached on a hit by pitch, followed by a 2-run homer to right-center field.

But Oak Mountain reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jake Rivers led off with a line drive double down the right field line off the first baseman’s glove. Pierce was then hit by a pitch. The runners advanced to 2nd & 3rd on a passed ball, and Gillespie drove in Rivers with a ground out to the pitcher. Cole Sester scored Pierce with a single, and the Eagles led 4-2 after 4 innings.

A one out walk and back-to-back singles with 2 outs allowed the Yellow Jackets to trim the lead to 4-3 in the top of the 5th.

Once again, Oak Mountain got that run back in the bottom half of the inning. Parker Campbell walked with 2 outs, stole second base, advanced to 3rd on an infield single by Rivers, and scored when Pierce singled to left.

The Eagles added 2 insurance runs in the 6th inning. Hunt singled with one out. Sullivan Tipton then came in to pinch run for Hunt and stole 2nd base. Connor Adams walked with Joseph Tolbert then coming in to run for Adams. Steven Moraski doubled to left center to score Tipton, and Campbell singled to right center to plate Tolbert & Moraski to finish the scoring for the Eagles.

Connor Adams was on the hill for the Eagles and went the distance, only throwing 87 pitches, to get the win. He allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, with 7 strikeouts and only 1 walk.

Jake Rivers, Mitchell Pierce, Steven Moraski, and Andrew Hunt had 2 hits each for the Eagles, with Rivers and Moraski each having a double. Davis Gillespie, Connor Adams, Cole Sester, & Parker Campbell also had hits for Oak Mountain. Campbell led the Eagles with 2 RBI, while Gillespie, Sester, Pierce, & Moraski had 1 RBI each. Campbell also led with 2 stolen bases, and Tipton contributed 1 stolen base.
