Oak Mountain beat 7A Spain Park Jaguars 9-4 at home to improve the season’s record to 4-2.
Spain Park jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning without even getting a hit. The first 2 batters walked to start the inning. After a pop out, a double steal put runners at 2nd & 3rd, and a sacrifice fly scored the first run. An infield error allowed the second run to score, and another error left runners at 1st & 3rd. Another double steal brought home the 3rd run to start the game for the Jaguars.
Oak Mountain got 1 run back in the bottom of the 1st when Davis Gillespie reached on an error with 2 outs, and Cole Sester drove him in with a double to make the score 3-1 after 1 inning.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Three consecutive 1 out singles by Connor Adams, Stephen Moraski, and Parker Campbell loaded the bases. Jake Rivers then tied the game at 3 with a single to right scoring Adams & Moraski. Mitchell Pierce laid down a safety squeeze bunt that scored Campbell to put the Eagles on top 4-3, a lead they never relinquished. Gillespie then hit the first home run of the year, over the left field fence, to increase the lead to 6-3.
Oak Mountain added a run in the 4th. Rivers led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Pierce grounded out, Gillespie drove in Rivers with a single to left, and the Eagles led 7-3 after 4.
The Jaguars scored a run in the top of the 5th inning to cut the lead to 7-4. After the first 2 batters of the inning struck out, the next 2 batters reached on a walk and a single to put runners at 2nd & 3rd. Spain Park then took advantage of another Eagle error on a ground ball to score a run to cut into the lead.
In the bottom of the 5th, Oak Mountain loaded the bases with no outs when Adams walked, Moraski got hit by a pitch, and Campbell walked. Pierce then delivered a one out single to left scoring Adams & Moraski, and the Eagles lead 9-4 after 5 innings. The Oak Mountain bullpen held the Jaguars scoreless in the final 2 innings to secure the win.
The Eagles pounded out 11 hits, with Jake Rivers leading the way with 3 hits, including a double and 2 RBI. Cole Sester delivered 2 doubles and an RBI. Davis Gillespie also had 2 hits with 3 RBI, including the big 2-run home run in the 2nd inning. Mitchell Pierce also produced 3 RBI with one 1 hit. Connor Adams, Stephen Moraski, and Parker Campbell contributed one hit each for the day.
Rivers started on the mound for Oak Mountain and went 5 innings, allowing only 2 hits and 4 runs, but only 1 earned run. He struck out 7 in getting the win. Drew Rowland pitched the 6th inning, allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, and striking out 2. Colton Smith came on in the 7th to close the game and get the save, also allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, with 1 strikeout.
