Cody Wells headed in the game-winner from a corner kick, breaking a 0-0 tie with less than a minute to play, lifting Oak Mountain (7-3, 3-0) to a 1-0 Metro Tournament win over Pelham.
The Eagles controlled the game, but couldn’t notch a score until Wells’ header, despite a number of good opportunities. Oak Mountain’s best opportunity in the first half came when Perry Brake beat a defender, but his shot went off the post. The rebound was struck by Collin Cartwright, but it went well over the crossbar.
In the second half, Oak Mountain garnered many more shots than did Pelham, but couldn’t find the back of the net until Wells’ heroics. Cartwright had a couple of near misses, Corbitt Grundhoeffer had a terrific header off a corner kick just wide, Patrick Guffey placed the ball on goal from free kicks, and Ryan Webb scorched a shot just wide off a beautiful cross from Wilson Rhodes that ricocheted out of the box.
The Eagles finally capitalized with a minute to play. Seth Acton sent in a curling corner, and Grundhoeffer and Wells were both there, with Wells knocking it in for the victory.
Meanwhile, the lockdown Oak Mountain defense continued its stellar ways, posting its fifth shutout in the last seven contests. Zay Brown went the distance in goal to earn the clean sheet.
The win tonight places Oak Mountain 1-0 in the Metro Tournament, with their second contest coming tomorrow night against Spain Park. The match will be held at Spain Park at 7:30 p.m.
